In Major League Baseball, the Baltimore Orioles traded superstar infielder Manny Machado to the Los Angles Dodgers for a package of five prospects. The Orioles had Machado rise to prominence with them and help them make two playoff runs in his time with the team. Both times, the Orioles fell short (2012 ALDS loss to the Yankees, and 2014 ALCS loss to the Kansas City Royals) of their goal.

Now, the Orioles are competing for a different prize, worst record in the league with the Royals. Winner of this dubious distinction gets the immediate boost of the number one pick in next year’s MLB Draft in June. While this pick may still be a few years from contributing, the overall boost in talent for the team with the number one pick is greater than any other spot in the draft if players are selected appropriately. Machado has a little over six million dollars owed to him for the remainder of the season. He looks to help the Dodgers make a push to the playoffs and a deep run in the postseason. Machado is an all-world talent on the left side of the infield and provides a strong bat to bolster LA’s postseason hopes.

In the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have sent Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for DeMar DeRozan as part of a bigger deal. The big question for the Raptors in all of this is whether or not Kawhi will resign with them in the offseason. He has mentioned going to Los Angeles to play with the Lakers and their new star Lebron James. What do the Raptors do if Kawhi does not resign and they fall short? Trading him at the deadline would be an option and one that would help them recoup assets for the future. Time will tell how this deal will help each team.
