Fatalities Caused by Amtrak Train Derail onto Washington Highway

Several people are dead from an Amtrak train derailing onto an interstate in Pierce County, Washington. Fatalities “are all contained to the train”, said Ed Troyer, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. Those in cars outside the train suffered injuries. Luckily, only one car of the train hit the highway, but was still able to injure many. The Interstate is a major highway between Mexico and Canada.

Many injured outside the train were able to walk away to get treatment. The train was going 50 mph over limit, 80 mph in a 30 mph speed limit curve. Officials are investigating why the train did not slow down. 77 patients are currently being treated, and three people are dead. The train was schedules to leave Seattle at 6 a.m. and arrive in Portland around 9:20 a.m. Representative Denny Heck of Washington stated that “something went very, very wrong.” He also said “unfortunately I think the fatality count is probably going to grow as we know it over the next few days.”
