The retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath looks to step into the spotlight by running as a Democrat in the Kentucky 6th Congressional District. Her campaign ad has gone viral and threatens Republicans all over the country by depicting a Democratic party that conservatives can stand behind. In her ad, she attacked both the incumbent she seeks to unseat, Republican Rep. Andy Barr, and Kentuckian Senator Mitch McConnell, who is also the Senate majority leader.
After spending 20 years in the United States Marine, McGrath looks to reshape the Democratic party after the crushing defeat Democrats felt in the 2016 election by losing both houses and the White House. When asked by NPR how she decided to run in 2018, she said “I realized I had to do something. I felt like I had two choices: I could accept things the way they were, sort of politics as usual, or I could accept the responsibility for trying to change something, trying to do something.”
McGrath went on to say, “the straw that broke the camel’s back for me was when the Republicans in the springtime were putting up their bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act, this terrible bill that nobody liked, and they were pushing it through Congress without debate, without anybody knowing what was in the bill, just to prove a political point.”
She stressed that she isn’t running as a women but that she is a woman running for office. She stressed that “part of that problem is women don’t run. We don’t run for office. It’s not that people are overwhelmingly voting against us. We just don’t step up to the plate.” She also believes that more veterans need to run for office. As a veteran, she has a very strong chance of winning the seat in 2018.
McGrath believes there is a divide occurring on both sides of the isle, that both Democrats and Republicans are struggling to pull together their base. She believes that she can bring together Democrats and turn some Republicans blue.
When asked about health care, she said “I like single-payer. We have a large infrastructure of health care in America. And maybe what we ought to do is try to shore up Obamacare and make it work. Make the holes that are in it, and there are some real holes; no one has ever said the Affordable Car Act was perfect, but let’s not lie and say it’s failing. It’s not failing.”
She went on to say regarding healthcare, “Many Kentuckians are benefiting from it (ACA). Even Republican Kentuckians are benefiting from the Affordable Care Act. Let’s have a conversation about it and actually try to shore it up and fill the holes. We still have large swaths of the American public that still cannot afford health care, even under the Affordable Care Act.”
Amy McGrath was a fighter pilot and the first female Marine to fly an F-18 in a combat mission. In her 20-year military career, she flew 89 combat missions. These missions included dropping bombs on al Qaeda and the Taliban, killing many. A democrat hasn’t held the seat she is running for since 2012, when the current incumbent she is running against went into office.
Fortunately for her, Barr has been facing many criticisms recently in town halls for his support of repealing the ACA. With her military history and intelligence, it seems that the Democratic party has a new face to present a strong message for other Democrats running all over the country. It seems if Republicans want to combat the phenomena that is Amy McGrath, they will either need a far right candidate or a moderate Republican. As the political climate in the United States dramatically heats up, the future seems uncertain. Many questions arise as new players enter the spotlight.
