In Fairfax, Virginia, Police found the body of a 17-year-old girl, Nabra Hussein, who was assaulted and abducted on her way to mosque after leaving an IHOP on Saturday. Officers have arrested 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres and have charged him with murder. Police reported that officers found her body on Sunday in a pond in Sterling, Virginia around 3 p.m.
WRC-TV reported a baseball bat being found in the area of the assault. This aligns with reports that a man came out of a car and began swinging a baseball bat at a group of Muslim women. The report stated that the man hit Nabra with the bat and abducted her after she fell.
Those in Nabra’s community have been shocked by this incident, reporting that something like this does not happen where they live. There has been a trend of hate crimes following the election of President Donald Trump. Arguments from Trump supporters suggest that hate crimes have always occurred. However, data indicates that the number of hate crimes have dramatically increased since the election of President Trump. This includes the recent Trump supporter who mistook two Indian engineers as Muslims, telling them to “get out of my country” before killing one of them.
However, Fairfax police detectives have stated that they have “not gotten any indication that this was motivated by hate or bias.” After Nabra’s death, mosque officials released a statement. “We are devastated and heartbroken as our community undergoes and processes this traumatic event. It is a time for us to come together to pray and care for our youth.”
